The Balsam Fir is often used as a Christmas tree or for land reclamation. Has a conical habit and aromatic needles. The needles are 1-inch long, blunt, rounded and a lustrous dark green. Makes an excellent screen or ornamental and is a good choice for cooler climates.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Balsam Fir has a slow growth rate. It grows up to 75 feet in height and 25 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 3 to 7. Prefers full sun to light shade and acid, moist soil.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 30 days
Germination: Seed may start to germinate in cold strat., sow seed 1/4 inch deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed
Other: Fall sowing in mulched beds is often prefered to artificial strat and spring sowing.
