The Blue Elderberry has dark blue fruit that appear pale blue due to the white waxy substance that covers them. The sweet fruits attract birds. Its yellow-white flowers are borne in flat clusters. This tree has grayish brown to black bark and smooth, dark green leaves. A very beautiful small tree or upright shrub.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Blue Elderberry has a fairly rapid growth rate. It grows up to 20 feet in height and 20 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 7. Prefers full sun to part shade. Will tolerate drought but needs well-drained, deep soil.

Scarification: Soak in hot tap water, let stand in water for 24 hours.
Stratification: Warm stratify for 30 days, cold stratify for 90 days
Germination: Sow seed 1/4 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed. Can be sown outdoors in the fall for spring germination.
