The Purple Leaf European Beech is unquestionably one of the best of the large ornamental shade trees. Magnificent and stately. While seedling color will vary, a proportion of seedlings will resemble the parent with a good purple colour. Also called the Copper Beech.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Purple Leaf European Beech has a slow growth rate. It grows 60 to 90 feet in height and 60 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 4 to 8. Prefers full sun and well-drained soil.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 90 days, (longer stratification,150 days, can increase germination)
Germination: Sow seed 3/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, keep moist, mulch the seed bed, can be sown outdoors in the fall for spring germination
