The American Ash is a handsome specimen with dark green leaves and dark grey bark with a ridged diamond pattern. Its leaves cascade a light shade that allows other plants to grow beneath the tree. Purple and yellow fall colors develop early and are quite stunning.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the American White Ash has a fast growth rate. It grows up to 90 feet in height and 50 to 80 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 3 to 9. It prefers full sun and deep, moist soil.
