The American Elm is a classic shade tree. It is a stately tree and has a vase-shaped crown and yellow fall colour. This tree has a high, spreading canopy creating an elegant shape. An excellent lawn or street tree. Also called the White Elm.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the American Elm has a fast growth rate. It grows up to 100 feet in height and 60 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 2 to 9. This tree prefers full sun and moist soil although it will tolerate drought once established.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: None required
Germination: Sow seed 1/16 inch deep , tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
