The Early Lilac has pale purple blooms that appear a week or two earlier than those of the Common Lilac. New growth is bronze-green. Later, colors turns to a glossy green and finally wine red in fall. Native to northern China. Often planted for its beautiful blooms and fragrance or used in a border or grouping or as a specimen in a small garden.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Early Lilac has a moderate growth rate. It grows up to 12 feet in height and 12 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 3 to 6. Prefers full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained soil. Fairly easy to grow.
How To Start These Seeds:
Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 30-90 days
Germination: Sow seed 1/4 inch deep, keep moist, mulch the seed bed, cover seedbed with some shade
Other: Sow outdoors in the fall for spring germination.
