The Japanese Zelkova tree is a fine, tough tree suitable for lawns, streets and parks. Leaves are elmlike and dark green with yellow, orange, or brown colour in fall. Rounded or oval habit with many vertical branches. Bark is reddish brown when young. May grow quickly when young. Popular as a bonsai subject.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Japanese Zelkova has a moderate to fast growth rate. It grows up to 80 feet in height and 50 to 80 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 6 to 8. Prefers full sun and rich, moist, well-drained soil. However, will tolerate poor soil conditions. Resitant to Dutch Elm Disease.

Scarification: Soak in water, let stand in water for 24 hours
Stratification: Cold stratify for 60 days
Germination: Sow seed 1/8 inch deep, tamp the soil, mulch the seed bed.
