This species is also known as a Western Yellow Pine. It has a straight trunk and a large crown. Fast growing and tall with dark yellow green needles. On mature trees, the bark has irregular scaley plates that look like puzzle pieces. In natural forests these trees can live up to 500 years.
When choosing a location, keep in mind that the Ponderosa Pine has a moderate to fast growth rate. It can grow up to 100 feet in height and 45 feet in spread. This pine can be planted in zones 3 to 6. Thrives in full sun and moist well-drained soils but will tolerate poor soil and drought.
